The rare first edition of 2 works on Iceland, Greenland and whaling. Johann Anderson (1674-1743) was a German lawyer, mayor of Hamburg as well as natural and linguist. He was the son of the Hamburg merchant and whaling ship owner Ammon Anderson. Anderson's work was posthumously published in 1746 as "Nachrichten von Island, Grönland und der Strasse Davis". Anderson, who had never been in Iceland or Greenland, wrote this work to contribute both to the scientific and the economic advancement of Hamburg. It deals with the living conditions in Iceland and Greenland and gives detailed descriptions of Iceland and Greenland/Davis Strait, with sections on whaling and a Danish-Dutch-Greenlandic dictionary as appendix. The book was translated into several languages. Niels Horrebow (1712-1760) was a Danish author and scientist. In 1749 he went to Iceland and stayed there for three years. He worked for the Academy of Sciences and did mathematical and physical observations. He also explored the local conditions for the institute. Horrebow's work was originally published in 1752 as "Tilforladelige Efterretninger om Island". It provides corrections to Anderson's work and gives detailed descriptions of Iceland, its geography, people and natural history. - Very fine copy. Tiele 39; Sabin 1407; Lauridsen II, 48; Cat.
