Second edition of Bayle's dictionary, which corrected and criticized the former attempts in the field. It was a milestone in the Western enlightenment movement, and was unsurpassed until Diderot's great Encyclopedie [1751-65], which owns a great deal to Bayle. - Graesse I, 314; Cf. PMM 300.€ 180
