(Rebacked w. old spines (partly) laid down, repaired at the extremities, w. former owner's stamp & cut in the ti-p. (another owner's name cut out?), yellowing throughout, some waterstaining at the top and a few (burn?) marks).

Second edition of Bayle's dictionary, which corrected and criticized the former attempts in the field. It was a milestone in the Western enlightenment movement, and was unsurpassed until Diderot's great Encyclopedie [1751-65], which owns a great deal to Bayle. - Graesse I, 314; Cf. PMM 300.
