INDIA -- LETTER of appointment for Henry Ballantine as American consul of Bombay. Preprinted document on paper, supplemented with legible handwriting, dated January 12th 1891. 330 x 405 mm. Signed by Queen Victoria (1819-1901) in the left upper margin and by her secretary (Lord Salisbury?) in the lower right corner. W. Victoria's blind stamped royal seal mounted in the upper right corner.

Henry Ballantine (1846-1914), was born in Ahmednagar, India to missionary parents Elizabeth and Henry Ballantine. Henry Ballantine graduated from Amherst College in 1868. He worked as merchant in Bombay from 1870 to 1872, and then in New York until 1891, when he returned to Bombay to serve as consul from 1891-1896. He wrote 'On India's Frontier or, Nepal: The Gurkhas' Mysterious Land', New York, 1895.
