SNOUCK HURGRONJE, C. Autograph note, dated May (?) 19, 1917. Written in ink on card, r° and v°, with pre-printed address Witte Singel 84a Leiden. 88 x 115 mm. Attached in book: T. MANN. Der Islam einst und jetzt. 1914. Or. clothcovered wrps. (Extremities worn).

Responding to an inquiry about a work by the young German scholar Dr. Traugott Mann, Snouck Hurgronje states he has no desire to read it, describing the author as having an "exaggerated sympathy for all that is Mohammedan." He famously concludes that German scholarship on Islam is compromised by the political alliance between Germany and the Ottoman Empire, stating: "Wie iets bruikbaars in het Duitsch over den Islam wil lezen, moet zich bepalen tot litteratuur, die van vóór Juli 1914 dateert." (Translation: "Whoever wishes to read anything useful in German about Islam, must restrict themselves to literature dating from before July 1914.").
