BEUKENBURG - QUARLES VAN UFFORD-TWISS, Clara Catharina May (1867-1927). "My verses/For my own dear sister [Amy]". Poetry album, containing a collection of hand written poems in English and German, tog. w. 16 very fine full-p. water colour drawings of birds by the same hand. 8°. Cont. red h. mor. w. 'Amy's book' gilt lettered on the spine, a.e.g. -- Added: "Zusje's Guestbook", a similar album, but here with literary quotations which are followed by numerous signatures of relatives and friends. Ad 1: Collection of poems and fine watercolours of (Dutch) birds given as a present to Henriette Amelie Jeannette ('Amy') Grothe-Twiss (1860-1947). Ad 2: Guestbook containing quotations from literature and reports on festive events celebrated on the Beukenburg estate. With the signatures of many prominent families: Quarles van Ufford, Teixeira de Mattos, Radermacher Schorer, Van Tienhoven, Van Tets, Van der Wijck, etc. The Beukenburg is an estate north of the Groenekanseweg on the east side of Groenekan. The name Twiss is of English origin, related to a place name ("fork in a river"), and came to the Netherlands through a patrician family that settled in Maartensdijk in the 19th c. The area was known for its mayors and members of other prominent families, such as Grothe and Quarles van Ufford. The Twiss family was prominent in the region, with influential members such as Mayor Willem Twiss and his daughter Amy Grothe-Twiss, a publicist.
