Van Helmont (1577-1644) strongly disagreed with Galen and preferred a more scientific approach based on experimental methods. He was the first to realize the physiological importance of ferments and gases to combat ailments, and indeed invented the word "gas". He treated digestive complaints caused by stomach acid with alkaline solutions. Just before his death in December 1644, he wrote down his ideas and vision for treating various illnesses and wounds in his 'Ortus Medicinae' and by doing so, laid the foundation of modern medicine as we know it today. - G-M 665 (not this edition).
