PSALMS -- (SOUTER LIEDEKENS. (179 (of 184)) lvs. (=A-Z8, but A1 (title-p.), Y1 and Z6-8 added in photostat). Sm-8°. 16th c. panelled cf. (Front side loose, several lvs. loose w. marginal issues (fraying, wear, etc.), outer margins last lvs. also frayed/brittle/worn, traces of use throughout).

Complete collection of Dutch psalm translations that remained popular throughout the centuries; several later editions testify to this. The psalms ('souter' is a corruption of the word 'psauter') are said to have been set to rhyme metrically by the Utrecht nobleman Willem van Zuylen van Nijevelt (died 1543). The monophonic melodies are, however, derived from popular songs - some of which were of German or French origin - that were then in circulation in the Netherlands. - Text printed in red and black, with numerous music scores ('square notation') in text. Copy most likely variant VIII (of 8) corresponding w. the features as described by Scheurleer in his 'De souterliedekens' (1898), see also Nijhoff/Kronenberg 1922. Very rare. - Sold w.a.f., not subject to return.
