MARNIX van St. ALDEGONDE -- DUNCANUS, M. Corte confutatie ende wederlegginghe van een fenijnich Boeck des Byencorf der H. Roomscher Kercken. Amst., (n.pr.), 1578. (4), 126 pp. - Bound with: J. HAREN. Antw., H. Wouters, 1586. (64) pp. - 2 in 1 vol. Sm-8°. Old vellum. (Paste downs detached, first work a bit waterstained).

Ad 1: Extremely rare refutation of 'Den Byencorf' by Marnix of St. Aldegonde, by the Amsterdam priest Maarten Donk (1505-90). He was a prominent pastor in the sixteenth-century Habsburg Netherlands. In the turbulent times of the sixteenth century he was a fervent defender of the old Catholic faith and fought the Reformation. - Belg. Typ. 989; Machiels D291. Not in Adams. Ad 2: Extremely rare Dutch translation of the reasons given by J. Haren for converting to Roman catholicism. Jan Haren (1540-1620), a calvinist preacher and politician, son of a decapitated protestant merchant, was a chaplain to the Walloon troops. In 1583 he converted to Roman catholicism and, in 1586 even became a Jesuit. In 1609 he suddenly became a protestant again. - BCNI 3899; Belg. Typ. 5905. Not in Machiels, Adams.
