Rare work on the cochineal, a scale insect from which the dye carmine is derived. Traditionally, cochineal was used for coloring fabrics. Cochineal dye was used by the Aztec and Maya peoples of North and Central America as early as the second century BC. After the Spanish conquest, carmine became a valued and very important trade product. Translated from the portuguese into Dutch, and with special observations regarding the cultivation of cochineal on Curaçao and in Surinam. - Very rare, 1 copy found in British library.
