Jean-Charles Alphonse Alphand (1817-1891) was a French engineer hired by Baron Haussmann (1809-1891) as chief engineer for the massive urban renewal program of boulevards, parks and public works known as Haussmann’s renovation of Paris. The present spectacular work is a beautifully executed witness to and catalogue of Alphand’s influential and important designs and efforts for the green spaces in urban Paris. It is noted for its beautiful large plates of garden lay-outs, architectural designs, all with lots of detail, including the 22 chromolithographs of plants and flowers. - Vicaire I, 38-9.
