Beautifully illustrated ethnographic work on the world's religions which was compiled from the works by Richard Simon, J. Abbadie, Dupin, P. le Brun, De Burnet, and many others. It contains also descriptions of irreligious customs too as, for instance, the Adamites, Flagellants, etc. Despite condemnation by the Catholic church, the work was a resounding success. As Hunt, Jacob & Mijnhardt in their 2010 book state: "'Ceremonies and customs' prepared the ground for religious toleration amid seemingly unending religious conflict, and demonstrated the impact of the global on Western consciousness (…) as it shaped the development of a modern, secular understanding of religion". Copy with ample margins. Bound without the later published and seperately sold frontispiece in vol. I (Brunet: 'Manque souvent'), else a very rare complete and uniform set w. the supplements on superstitions (Cohen-de Ricci, 134: 'Les deux de Superstitions (surtout en petit papier) sont fort difficiles à trouver'), in the first edition (Cohen-de Ricci: 'La première ed. est celle qu'on préfère, parce qu' elle contient les premières épreuves'). Our edition conformable to Brunet I, 1742-3; Graesse II, 104.
