JAVA -- GRONEMAN, J. Tjandi Parambanan op Midden-Java, na de ontgraving. Leiden, E.J. Brill, 1893, (4), 30 pp. W. 2 fold. plans and 64 numbered collotype photogr. (153 x 219 mm) by K. Céphas ('Court photographer at Yogyakarta'), bordered in black, laid down on mounts, under (later added) tissue guards. Fol. Cont. h. brown mor. (Owner's entry on ti.-p. and 2 red stamps, mounts a bit warped, some minor foxing to mounts throughout).

These photographs by Kassian Céphas, the first native Javanese professional photographer, belong to the earliest detailed visual records of the Prambanan Temple, the largest Hindu temple complex in Central Java. The temple was largely in ruins until rediscovered and excavated in the 19th c. Fine copy. - Rouffaer/Muller p. 544; Toekang Potret, p. 70 (on Céphas).
