LOW COUNTRIES -- BREUKELEN -- "VEUES DE GUNTERSTEIN. Dediees A Madame de Gunterstein et de Thienhoven". Amst., N. Visscher (II)/J. Le Moine de l'Espine, n.d. (between 1680 and 1699). 16 engr. views, incl. ti.-plate and a series of 15 views by J. Mulder of the castle and gardens, captioned in the plates, printed (uncut!) on 4 lge-fol. sheets.

The "Madame de Gunterstein et de Thienhoven" mentioned in the dedication of these fine series of engravings refers to Magdalena Poulle (1632-1699) who bought the ruin of Gunterstein in 1680 and had it completely renovated into what it is today. She had an internationally renowned collection of exotic plants. She was also a technological pioneer: one of the first private collectors, she had an innovative type of greenhouse with an early form of underfloor heating. This prevented the humidity in the greenhouse from becoming unsafe for tropical plants. - Rare complete set. Hollstein Dutch 27; Paradisus Batavus, p. 209 (listing only 15 plates); The Anglo-Dutch Garden, p. 122-4 and cat. nr. 136: "The Gunterstein orangery could be justly called a reflection of the legendary garden of the Hesperides from classical mythology, (…)".
