(MINUCCI, M.). Histoire des Uscoques de la traduction du Sieur Amelot de la Houssaie. Paris, C. Barbin, 1682. (8), 385, (9). Cont. cf. w. gilt dec. spine w. raised bands & speckled edges. (Spine ends dam.).
French translation of the original Italian by Minucci, later supplemented by P. Sarpi (1613). The Uskoks started out as displaced Kroatians, forced to move by the push of the Ottoman Empire into the Balkans. They fought alongside both Venetians and Austrians against the Turks. However, the Uskoks turned to piracy and after an escalating series of incidents the Venetians attacked them in 1615, decimating them and forcing them to disband their armies in 1618. The remnant of this temporary people migrated deeper into the Balkans. - Barbier II:772:a; Atabey 819; BnF; Not in Blackmer.€ 400
