MIDDELBURG -- BRANS, T. Catechismus der natuur. Ten gebruike van kinderen. 2e dr. Amst., M. de Bruin, 1779. vi, 102 pp. W. 1 fold. plate. Sm-8°. Cont. vellum w. gilt coat of arms of Middelburg on both sides, green ties. (One tie and price lack, bind. a bit warped, lower part of first half waterstained).
This book was seen as an imitation of J.F. Martinet's Kleine Katechismus der natuur voor kinderen. Martinet believed some booksellers opposed his printer Johannes Allart and retaliated by publishing a similar work under Brans' name. Brans claimed his manuscript was finished before he knew of Martinet’s project, but on a friend's advice decided to publish anyway. The true identity of "Taco Brans Jr." is uncertain, though there are indications it may have been the Patriot writer Pieter ’t Hoen (1744–1828). - Buijnsters, Bibl.
