MARITIME HISTORY - TRAVELLING -- HOUTMAN -- L(ODEWIJCKSZOON), G. ('Willem') M.A.W. Premier livre de l'Histoire de la Navigation aux Indes Orientales par les Hollandois et des choses a eux advenues: ensemble les conditions, les meurs, et manieres de vivre des nations, par eux abordees. Amst., C. Nicolas, 1598. 54 lvs. W. 50 engr. maps and plates by/after Th. de Bry c.s. and woodcut profiles in text. Lge-4°. Cont. limp vellum bind. (Spine repaired, leaf G2 (with 1 woodcut plan on r°) very skilfully replaced in photostat, a bit thumbed, outer margins in some places cut close to/on outer plate edges, small inconspicuous repairs to margins in places, but a v.g. copy).

This work recounts the first Dutch expedition (1595-1597) to Java, commanded by Cornelis de Houtman. This pioneering account describes the voyage, local customs, the spice trade, and includes the first European description (and map!) of Bali, thus breaking the Portuguese monopoly. This voyage was harsh and difficult: only one ship of the four that sailed , returned safely home after losing 80 percent of its crew. The book was printed in Dutch, French and Latin in its first year of printing. All of these original editions are rare. - Tiele, Mémoires, 113; Tiele 511; Suarez 1999.
