This work recounts the first Dutch expedition (1595-1597) to Java, commanded by Cornelis de Houtman. This pioneering account describes the voyage, local customs, the spice trade, and includes the first European description (and map!) of Bali, thus breaking the Portuguese monopoly. This voyage was harsh and difficult: only one ship of the four that sailed , returned safely home after losing 80 percent of its crew.
