Christophorus Clavius (1538–1612) was a German Jesuit mathematician and astronomer, best known as the main architect of the Gregorian calendar (1582). Clavius’ commentary, first published in 1570, became a standard astronomy textbook in Europe, with at least 16 editions by 1618. It expanded on Sacrobosco’s geocentric model, integrated mathematical rigor, and addressed contemporary astronomical debates—though it notably avoided endorsing Copernicus’ heliocentric system. - Houzeau-Lancaster I, 2678.€ 300
