SALVIATI, L. Il primo libro delle orazioni. Nuovamente raccolte. Firenze, Nelle Stamperia de' Giunti, 1575. (8), 161, (1), (2 blank) pp. W. woodcut ti-vign. 4°. Old vellum. (Sides a bit wavy, margins cut, foxed in places).

Leonardo Salviati (1540–1589) was an Italian writer, linguist, and member of the Florentine Academy. One of the most famous orations in this collection is "Orazione in lode della fiorentina favella", in which Salviati passionately argues for the superiority of the Florentine dialect over other Italian dialects and even classical languages like Latin and Greek. He advocates for the use of Florentine as the standard Italian language, emphasizing its beauty, historical importance, and the prestige of its literary tradition, including figures like Dante and Petrarch. In the fourth oration, Salviati praises Michelangelo Buonarroti, celebrating his unparalleled genius and elevating painting above poetry and other professions. The text offers a rare contemporary perspective on Michelangelo’s impact during the Renaissance. - Not in Adams. Edit 16, CNCE 28451.
