ALBUM AMICORUM -- DONCAN, A. "Groenen Album van A. Doncan Med. Stud. 1849". 1849-53. 59 lvs. with contributions in ms. (i.a. by Allard Pierson, Hendrik Kern), r° & v° and 12 blank lvs. Sm-4°. Clothbacked brds.

This 'groenen album' belonged to the medical student Andries Doncan (1828–1873), later physician in Wormerveer, who studied at the Utrechtse Hoogeschool between 1849 and 1854. The album contains handwritten contributions from his fellow first-year students. The entries—mostly short poems, humorous verses, and mottoes—refer to student life and especially to the "groentijd", the traditional initiation period for new students. Together they offer a vivid and often playful portrait of the early years of Dutch student culture in the mid-19th century. Inserted in the album is a printed list of the "Senatus Veteranorum" of September 1852, naming Doncan as Ab actis (secretary) of the student senate, with his address on Wittevrouwenstraat. - Contributions by i.a.: Allard Pierson, Hendrik Kern, A.W. de Klerck, F.L. Snouck Hurgronje, L.G. Roijaards, J.H. Strick van Linschoten, A.J. Begemann, W.A.J. Schimmelpenninck van der Oije, A.W.L. Talma, P. H. Hugenholtz, P. A. de Bruine, etc.
