First edition of 'The praise of the ass', a satirical work in the tradition of Brant's 'Ship of fools' and Erasmus's 'Praise of folly'. Heinsius's satire, which is adressed to the government of those who are ignorant of everything and despise the sciences and letters, attained great popularity and went through numerous editions. The author was the most famous literary figure of 17th c. Holland, professor of Classics at Leyden, and librarian to the University. - Willems 215; Brunet III, 84.
