BIRTHDAY WISH -- "JUBEL ZEGEN-WENSCH Wegens de Verjaringe van den Eerwaarde Heer Johan Klaus Oud geworden zijnde 50 jaren, de 3 August. 1749". Handwritten poem w. a border of expertly handdrawn flowers, neatly coloured & cut & pasted onto a blue-gray folio. 590 x 410 mm. (Top of the 'crown' seems to lack, upper margin of background yellowed, pencil annot. on lower margin of background). -- Added: 7 similar testimonies of joy. (8).

This birthday wish is dedicated to a military man called Johan Klaus, active in the Dutch Army between 1705-1775. An annotation suggests the recipient may have been stationed at Leeuwarden. The birthday boy is addressed as "luitenant" in the poem by the "little ladies of the Guard" (the wives of his colleagues?) and is praised for his personability and his proficiency with the law. However he is also warned that since he is now 50, the end may be drawing nigh; he should walk the straight and narrow from now on, if he wants to spend Eternity singing the praises of the Lord.
