ACCOUNT BOOK of the Trust of John Ackland Esq. Devon/Somerset (likely Wiveliscombe region), 1746–1767. Ca. 190 leaves, of which 86 leaves with manuscript entries in ink, neatly ruled throughout in double columns. Fol. Cont. vellum w. hand-lettered title to upper cover: "The Account Book of J. Ackland Esq., Trustee, begun 26th December 1746." (Vellum a bit soiled).

This substantial and detailed volume records over two decades (1746–1767) of estate management on behalf of John Ackland Esq., a major landowner in Somerset. The book is maintained by several persons (i.a. Philip Sydenham, Charles Hill), acting as trustee or estate agent. The accounts include: rents collected from named tenants on multiple estates (Bickham Barton, Tremington, Pill, Stow Barton, Barton Staple); payments for land tax, church rates, window tax, schooling of the poor, and maintenance; payments to local craftsmen: carpenters, blacksmiths, masons, glaziers, shoemakers, etc.; numerous named individuals and families across Somerset and Devon. A rare and extremely well-preserved example of 18th-century estate and trust accountancy, offering rich insight into rural administration, local taxation, social history, and landed wealth in West England.
