Kolbe gives an exact and detailed account of all aspects of life at the Cape, including its geography, the VOC government, climate, flora and fauna, followed by a highly interesting and accurate account of the Khoekhoe (Khoikhoi) from the author's own personal investigations, reporting on their language, religion, manner of living, singular traditions, customs, hunting capabilities, marriage ceremonies, circumcisions, education, etc. Peter Kolbe (also referred to as Kolb and Kolben) (1675-1726) was a German teacher, astronomer, ethnologist, traveller, and explorer of South Africa.
