One of the most important and earliest publications of the Dutch presence in modern Guyana and one of the rarest titles on Surinam. It is one of the first printed reports on the Dutch Colonies of Berbice and Essequibo and the only existing eyewitness information on Berbice dating from this period. The first part of the book consists of van Berkel’s voyage to the Colony of Berbice between 1670 and 1674 (incl. descriptions of several Indian tribes, and treatment of slaves), the second part is a fictitious journey to Surinam made in the 1680s. In this travelogue he wrote for the first time about the electric eel. - Doorne/Kempen, Suriname-cat. v.d.
