VERTOT, R.-A. Histoire des Chevaliers Hospitaliers de Saint Jean de Jerusalem, appellés depuis Chevaliers de Rhodes, & aujourd'hui Chevaliers de Malte. 5ème ed. Amst., Par la Compagnie, (=fictitious imprint), 1757. 5 vols. Cont. speckled brds. (Covers worn & chafed, several joints delicate, however text is quite clean & neat w. minimal yellowing).
This is the last historical work by the French savant Abbé de Vertot (1655-1735), a general history of the Knights of the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, commonly known as the Knights Hospitaller and later Knights of Rhodes and Knights of Malta. It displays an heroic struggle between the Christians, led by the Frenchmen, and the Infidels. The papacy however was treated with no respect and the book was immediately condemned by the Order of Malta and put on the Index of forbidden books in Rome in 1728. The fifth part contains a chapter with "Discours sur l’Alcoran", pp. 382-416. - For another ed. cf. Graesse VII, 288.€ 180
