ISLAM -- QUR'AN -- WARNER, L. Compendium Historicum Eorum quae Muhammedani de Christo et praecipuis aliquot religionis Christianae capitibus tradiderunt. Leiden, J. le Maire, 1643. (8), 56 pp. Sm-4°. (Wrps. & title-p. worn at the margins, a few neat annot. in an old hand at the beginning, light waterstaining in the last lvs.).

Levinus Warner (1619-1665), Orientalist and diplomat. His legacy of 4000 books and manuscripts in Arabic and Persian forms the core of the extensive Arabic collection of the University Library of Leiden, named Legatum Warnerianum after him. In the Compendium he collected references to Christ and Christianity from Arabic sources, among which the Qu'ran. The book consists mostly of translations of and commentary to quotes in (beautifully printed) Arabic. - The former owner of the book seems to be James Merrick (1720-69), of Trinity College, Oxford, scholar and poet. Among his works are translations from the Greek, versifications of the Psalms, and perhaps most notably, the poem 'The Chameleon'. - Added: G.N. du RIEU, ed. Levini Warneri de rebus Turcici epistolae ineditae. 1883. Mod. cl. - Breugelmans, Fac et Spera, 1643:15; Smitskamp PO, 326.
