Pedro Barbosa, a celebrated Portuguese jurist of the 16th c., was professor of law at Coimbra. He opposed Philip II of Spain as a usurper of the crown of Portugal, but Philip nevertheless created him a councillor of state and chancellor of the kingdom. He is frequently quoted by 18th c. Roman Dutch lawyers.
