WEST INDIES -- (JENKINSON, C.). The conduct of the Dutch, relating to their breach of treaties with England. Particularly their breach of the articles of capitulation, for the surrender of Surinam, in 1667; and their oppressions committed upon the English subjects in that colony. With a full account of the case of Jeronimy Clifford, late merchant and planter of Surinam, deceased (…). Lond., C. Say, 1760. (2), 220 pp. W. engr. front. Mod. full cf. (Blank margins of first and last few lvs. browned, sl. age-toned).

Muller, Books on America 1462 states that this scandalous pamphlet was issued by the descendants of a certain J. Clifford, in order to finally obtain abolition of a sentence pronounced on Clifford in Jan. 1692 by the council of Surinam for mutiny, condemning him to be hanged. The sentence was mitigated to 7 years' imprisonment and at last entirely remitted. The pamphlet is strongly biased against the Dutch, but also provides a wealth of information on the internal affairs of Surinam in the last years of the 17th century. Rare. - Doorne/Kempen, Suriname-cat. v.d. UB A'dam, 3174; Sabin 13686 & 15201; Rouffaer/Muller p. 621.
