First edition. - Comte, Auguste (1798-1857) French positive philosopher. His political philosophy, elaborated on the basis of his positive sociology, was a noteworthy attempt to reconcile science with religion, and the ideals of the Revolution of 1789 with the doctrine of the counterrevolution of his own time. He had numerous disciples, such as Littré & J.S. Mill. His ideas still have important meaning and interest. - Ziegenfuss/Jung, 199-200; Einaudi 1204; Brunet VI, 3941.€ 240
