Jan van der Heyden (1637-1712), landscape painter and inventor (in 1672) of a flexible fire hose. By sewing together the edges of a strip of leather the hoses could be applied for both suction and delivery, so that the engines could be continuously supplied with water and the stream could be more readily directed on the seat of the fire. The fine plates, for the greater part depicting notable fires in and around Amsterdam, clearly point out the advantages of the new hoses and adjusted fire engines and are actually 'advertisements' for Van der Heyden's invention. Second edition of this great fire fighting work with the six additional plates. - NNBW III, 584-6; Wurzbach I, 685-7; Muller, 2301; Graesse III, 230-1; Atlas v. Stolk, 2832.
