VINCK(E)BOONS -- (MEN AND ANIMALS struggling against Death and Father Time). 1610. Etching by Boëtius à Bolswert (?) after David Vinck(e)boons. 277 x 382 mm (plate size). (Trimmed close to plate edge, remnants of paper hinges from previous mounting on v°).

First state. Very rare allegorical representation of Death shooting its arrows at an armed crowd of young and old, poor and rich, men and women emerging from a gate. Father Time lashes out with his scythe at instruments of science such as globe and compass, but also at objects related to the arts. Fame is chased away by Death. In the background, Death shoots its arrows at elephants and other animals. Below the scene is a Latin verse about this battle of Death by I. Semmius. No watermark visible. In very good condition. - Hollstein, Vinckboons, 10-(I).
