Jacques Mieses (born Jacob Mieses 1865-1954) was a German-born British chess player. After the Nazi takeover of Germany, the Jewish Mieses moved to the UK. He was one of the inaugural recipients of the title International Grandmaster from FIDE in 1950. He became a naturalized British citizen after World War II. The first letter is addressed to the Dutch chess master, but above all chess journalist/writer 'Wats' Schelfhout (1874-1951), who was the editor of Mieses' 'De kleine schaakgids'.
