GUICCIARDINI, L. Description de touts les Paysbas, autrement appellez. La Germanie Inferieure. Ou Basse Allemagne. Amst., H. Laurents, 1641. (12), 606, (38) pp. W. engr. title, heraldic engr. (v° letterpress title-p.) & 78 (for the greater part full-p.) engr. views. 4°-obl. Cont. vellum w. red speckled edges. (Discreet blind stamp on ti-p., lvs. Eee3-Eee4 bound before Eee1-2, some marg. stains in places, sl. browned).

Very good copy of this fourth French edition of this famous description of the Netherlands. Laurents' edition was printed by Arnoud Benier at Campen. The first edition, in Italian language, was published Antwerp, 1567, the illustrations mainly cut in wood. The first copperengraved edition, in Italian, appeared in 1581. The importance of Guicciardini's work as one of the major historical sources for the history of The Netherlands needs no further comment, nor the beauty of the work as illustrated book, reflecting the emerging self-confidence of the young republic at the beginning of its Golden Age. - Guicciardini Illustratus 21; Haitsma Mulier/v.d. Lem 195b; Tiele 428 (note); see also at length H. de la Fontaine Verwey. Uit de wereld v.h. boek II, pp. 9-31. - From the library of Willem Cornelis Ackersdijck (1760-1843), Dutch jurist, historian and lawyer from 's-Hertogenbosch, with his name entry on v° last leaf, dated 1776.
