Magnificent plates by Frans Jansz. Post (1612-1680) who accompanied John Maurice of Nassau, governor-general of Brazil from 1636 tot 1644. Present plate numbers 21, 28, 42, 44, 45, and 54, all taken from: C. Barlaeus's 'Rerum per octennium in Brasilia et alibi nuper gestarum sub praefectura (…) J. Mauritii, Nassoviae, (…).' Amst., J. Blaeu, 1647. Three plates depict naval battles between the Dutch and the Spanish fleets of the coast of Brazil in 1640, one depicts 13 ships which were part of the Dutch fleet present in Brazil, and two depict fortresses: Elmina in Ghana (from where slaves were exported to Brazil) and the entrance to the Paraiba river in Brazil with a view of Fortress Margareta. - Borba de Moraes p. 78-9.€ 1500
