Cont. vellum w. raised bands, dec. gilt back, gilt arms of Amsterdam in each compartment, gilt coat of arms of Amsterdam on both sides, in a double gilt border w. repeated coat-of-arms of Amsterdam at corners. (Upper joint partly split, bind. rubbed/chafed, gilt coat of arms on front side almost gone, corners bumped, prize & ties fail, a bit browned/foxed). -- Added: Another prize binding (Rather rubbed/chafed) of Amsterdam (Aristophanes, Comœdiæ undecim, 1690). -- (2).

Ad 1: Dibdin II, 23-24: "This is the celebrated and magnificent edition of Herodotus (…) it is justly called the editio optima, in reference to any edition of Herodotus previously published.
