QUINTILIANUS. De institutione oratoria ll. XII. Collatione Cod. Gothani et Iensonianae ed. aliorumque librorum ac perpetuo comm. ill. a I.M. Gesnero. Acc. praef. & indices copiosissimi. Gött., A. Vandenhoeck, 1738. (36), 640, (192) pp. 4°. Cont. vellum. (Upper hinge a bit weak/loosening, upper margin faintly stained at the beginning).
First edition by Gesner, who was appointed Rector of St Thomas School, Leipzig, in 1730, where Johann Sebastian Bach was Director of Music. Gesner much appreciated Bach's work and they became close friends. This work contains one of the earliest published references to the music of J.S. Bach (page 61, note 3). In 1747 Bach published his Musical Offering and it may well be that Gesner's edition of Quintilian provided the inspiration for that work. - Graesse V, 529; Dibdin II, 370: "A very useful and admirable edition. (…) the best edition of Quintilian yet published."€ 360
