CARICATURE -- "LEEUW EN HONDEN GEVECHT". (1652). Broadside consisting of 2 conjoined parts. Engr. by Cr. v.d. Passe (II) in 4 sequences, 220 x 275 mm, above a letterpress text in 4 columns. (Margins short, traces of former hinging on v°, but in good condition). -- Added: "DE WORSTELENDE MAAGD, Tot Bescherming van hare Vryheit". (1672). Broadside. Anonymous engr. above a letterpress text of 2 columns. 392 x 280 mm (paper size). (Central vertical fold partly torn and rep., traces of former hinging on v°). -- (2).

Ad 1: Scarce cartoon of England during the First Anglo-Dutch War, 1652. The Dutch Lion is lulled to sleep by the music of the Spaniard's cello but is tickled awake in his ear by Cromwell. Two English dogs bark at the lion, but their tails are pinched off by the Dutch Sailor with hot tongs. In the background a naval battle and fights between the lion and dogs. - Muller 2037; Atlas v. Stolk 2182 (without the text). Ad 2: The Dutch Virgo is situated in 'Den Hollandschen tuyn' and holds with difficulty the standard on which stands the freedom hat, which threatens to be pulled down by many warriors and a flying rooster (France). - Muller 2310.
