Matsuki Koan called himself translator/physician. He studied medicine, Western civilization and Dutch in Japan. In 1862 he accompanied the Takeuchi delegation to Europe as physician/translator. Later on, Matsuki was to work for the Japanese government and assumed the name of Terashima Munenori.
