GOEJE, M.J. de. Mémoires d'histoire et de géographie orientales. (2nd ed.). Leiden, E.J. Brill, 1886. (8), 232 pp. Or. blue printed wrps., unopened. (Spine sl. browned, else a very good copy). (Mémoires d'Histoire et de Géographie Orientales N° 1).

Second (much enlarged!) edition (first published in 1862). French text with Arabic passages in the appendix. An important and rare work on the Qarmatins of Bahrain. The Qarmartins were a revolutionary Shi'a Ismaili sect, which took control of Bahrain in 899 AD and instigated a break from orthodox Islam that extended to the sack of Mecca in 930 AD. They were the dominant force in the Persian Gulf and Middle East for much of the 10th century, until a number of destabilising factors led to their defeat by the Abbasids (in 976) and subsequent diminishment.
