Jacques l'Hermite (c. 1582-1624), sometimes also known as Jacques le Clerq, was a Dutch merchant, explorer and admiral known for his journey around the globe with the Nassau Fleet (1623–1626). He served the Dutch East India Company as chief merchant in Bantam and Ambon Island in the Dutch East Indies. The Chilean Hermite Islands near Cape Horn which his fleet charted in February 1624 are named after him. The object of this voyage was to find a better passage than that of Magellan by which the Dutch could reach the Moluccas from the east. Johannes Walbeeck (1602-1649), Dutch navigator, cartographer and first governor of Curaçao, is likely to be the author. - Landwehr, VOC, 250; Tiele 666; Tiele, Mémoire 77-e ("Sans titre séparé. (…) Réimpression de l'édition de 1643, avec la description du Pérou & du Chili (…)").
