GERSON, Johannes. Secunda pars operu[m]. (Strassbourg, J. Grüninger, 1488 (3 July)). 1 (of 4) vol. 286 lvs. W. 1 fine full-p. woodcut of Saint Christopher (Schreiber 4104), & rubricated in red. Fol. Late 15th/early 16th c. richly blind tooled (floral decoration) pigskin over wooden brds. (floral decoration on back cover surrounded by a border w. animals/flowers) w. raised bands, & w. brass catches. (Clasps gone, small defect to spine, chain hole visible in back cover, lower ticket removed from front side (colour difference), faintly waterstained/browned in places).

Volume two only of the extensive Strasbourg edition of the works of Johannes Gerson (1363-1429), edited by Peter Schott und Johann Geiler von Kaysersberg. Johannes Gerson, chancellor of the University of Paris, was one of the most influential theologians of the fifteenth century. He worked to resolve the Great Schism and played an important role at the Council of Constance, where he influenced the decisions concerning the fate of the Hussites. His extenisve writings on ecclesiology, reform, pastoral care and mysticism were very popular during the later Middle Ages and were frequently printed during the second half of the fifteenth century, both as individual treatises and in collected editions.
