GALLE, Philip (1537-1612). (The Seven Wonders of the World and the Ruins of the Coliseum). Complete set of 8 engravings after Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574) on paper. Each 212 x 262 mm. Recently hinged to mounts. (All trimmed to the plate mark (the first plate even somewhat beyond), lower margin of plates 2 and 3 w. small chips, lower corners of plates 2 and 7 gone, surface of images unobtrusively chafed (espec. along borders)).

Presenting the Great Pyramid of Giza - Hanging Gardens of Babylon - Statue of Zeus - Temple of Artemis - Mausoleum of Halicarnassus - Colossus of Rhodes - Pharos (Lighthouse) of Alexandria and the Coliseum. This series of prints also served as a model for a World Map designed by Willem Jansz. Blaeu from 1606 where seven of the eight engravings ornate the lower border in 8 oval medallions.
