PLANCIUS -- "ORBIS TERRARUM TYPUS (…)/Beschrijvinghe der geheeler werelt (…)". (Amst., c. 1604). Engr. world map by B. v. Doetecum after P. Plancius. 287 x 517 mm. (Outer margins short/cut on plated edge, bit soiled & worn, tear closed in right upper margin). -- And 5 o. engraved maps and 1 plan (of Jerusalem) to the Bible completing the series, of which 5 by Van Doetecum (Deutecum/Doetecom/Doetechum, etc.) after P. Plancius. Amst., J.E. Cloppenborch, (c. 1604). Each map embellished w. 15 oval biblical scenes that surround the maps. All c. 295 x 495 mm. (Map of the Promised Land w. split in central fold running into image, w. small tear in image and w. repair to v° outer left margin, plan of Jerusalem w. rep. on v°., all maps a bit soiled/thumbed, outer left and right margins short).

Rare complete series of the so-called 'second map series' by Petrus Plancius (1552-1622). The world map in its second state with the text 'Terra Australis/Magallanica' added to both hemispheres. Cf. Shirley 177; Poortman p. 129. The other 5 maps of the series by Van D. - depicting Eden, the Exodus Route, the Mediterranean, and 2 of the Holy Land - are all in first state, according to the identification details mentioned by Hollstein. The plan of Jerusalem is after Plancius and published by Cloppenborch as well, but is not signed by Van D. The biblical scenes after David Vinckboons that surround the maps "maken de kaarten tot ware kunststukjes", according to Poortman, p. 127. - New Hollstein, Van Doetecum Family, 866 and 1043-47.
