Carl Witthaus (1868-1950), dentist. Originally from Germany, he practiced in Rotterdam for most of his adult life. A pioneer of a more compassionate dentistry. On the technical side, he emphasized caries prevention, the conservation of the natural tooth and the detrimental effects of fear to the patients. On the social side, he was an activist for socialised dentistry and preventive action in the population at large. The Dutch organization for buccal health, Ivoren Kruis, has named their award for merit in the field of dentistry after him.€ 90
