SNOUCK HURGRONJE, C./ I. GOLDZIHER/ Th. NÖLDEKE/ B. MORITZ -- COLLECTION of 15 autograph letters and 1 postcard. 1905-1932. Mss. on paper (r° and v°), all signed and dated.
Collection of 15 autograph letters and 1 autograph postcard by the leading Orientalists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries: Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), Ignaz Goldziher (1850-1921), Theodor Nöldeke (1836-1930), and Bernhard Moritz (1846-1916). The recipients are Gabriel Ferrand, Carl Heinrich Becker, and Christiaan Rinkes. Owing to their wealth of philological annotations and reflections on Qur'anic exegesis, the Ottoman jihad proclamation, and Dutch colonial Islamic policy, the letters in this collection provide a unique and exceptionally coherent picture of the international scholarly network that shaped modern Islamic studies. The collection comprises: 2 letters in French by Ignaz Goldziher to Gabriel Ferrand (dated 6 May 1905 and 20 Nov. 1913); 4 letters in French by Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje in French to Gabriel Ferrand (dated between 27 Jan. 1910 and 9 Dec. 1922), 4 letters by the same and 1 postcard to Christiaan Rinkes (dated between 5 Apr. 1911 and 25 Feb. 1913), and 2 letters by the same in German (probably) to C.H. Becker; 2 letters by Theodor Nöldeke in German to Christiaan Rinkes (dated 1 Feb. 1911 and 28 July 1911). A more substantive description in English of the individual letters is available upon request.€ 5000
