Original Latin edition of the famous 'Verantwoordingh' ('Apology'); the translation was made by the author himself. The book was published the same year as the original Dutch version. The Dutch version was prohibited by the States General the very month of publication (i.e. November 1622), and the Latin version was placed on the Roman Index on March 26, 1626. This, plus the fact that during the period that Grotius stayed in Paris his works were printed in very small numbers, accounts for the relative rarity of the present first Latin edition. - Ter Meulen/Diermanse 880.€ 180
