Old mottled cf. w. raised bands, dec. gilt back, sides ruled in gilt, red speckled edges. (Bind. rather dam.: label-compartment of spine gone, wormholed, sev. scratches, weak joints; endpapers loose, engr. title loose and inner margin of title a bit frayed, lf. 5 bound after lf. 6, our copy not issued with portrait on v° ti-p., margins a bit thumbed in places, a few tiny wormholes, sl. age-toned, but interior condition overall good; 'Leo Belgicus': Left margin skilfully rep., tear running into image closed on v° w. small piece of paper, sl. age-toned).

First published in 1583 and continuously expanded account of the events in the Dutch war from the Spanish point of view. The plates by F. Hogenberg depicting views and battle scenes in the Low Countries i.a. Antwerp, Brussels, Tournai, Mons, Mechelen, Zichem, Kortrijk, Diest, Cambrai etc. - Brunet I, 122-123; VD 16, 4771 (but without portait and with map); Adams, E-1175 (first edition).
