The 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake struck the Japanese island of Honsu on 1 sept. of that year. The earthquake, an 8.0 on the Moment Magnitude Scale, devastated Tokyo, Yokohama and the surrounding prefectures. An enormous death toll and the utter devastation of all infrastructure triggered widespread social unrest, which was only partially alleviated by the declaration of martial law and extensive national and international relief and restoration efforts. The present work is a compilation of geographical, historical and statistical information on the event, plus the imperial edicts that where issued in the wake of the disaster.
