WORLD MAPS -- "ORBIS TERRARUM de integro in plurimis emendatus, auctus, et icunculis illustratus". (Amst., N.J. Visscher, c. 1657). Engr. world map in cont. colouring. 310 x 483 mm. (Skilfully closed splits in blank margins, 3 vertical folds faintly visible, slightly discold. at foot of central fold, but in v.g. condition).
Exquisitely decorated double hemisphere world map, surrounded by engravings including allegorical representations of the continents as well as native inhabitants and wildlife. This is Visscher's first world map to be included in Dutch Bibles - a custom that began in 1657 according to Shirley - and the prototype for the surrounding decorations that were copied by several other cartographers. - Shirley 401; Schilder VI, p. 93-5 (listing this map as the 3rd state of the 1614 Claes Jansz. Visscher map).€ 900
